Impact Painting is a family-owned painting company working across northern Indiana, southwest Michigan and upstate South Carolina. We paint interiors and exteriors, refinish kitchen cabinets, stain and paint decks, and take on commercial work in two of our three markets.
Our story
Our tagline is “Done Right. Done Yesterday.” The first half is the promise. The second half is the joke every homeowner makes when they have been waiting three weeks for a painter to call them back, and it is on the truck because the waiting is the part people complain about most.
The company started as a small family operation in the Michiana area, painting houses for people who lived nearby, and most of what it is now came out of that. We answer the phone. We turn up when we said we would. We would rather tell you at the estimate that a job needs something we cannot do than find it out with your furniture already stacked in the middle of the room.
None of that is a differentiator anybody can prove on a website, which is why the rest of this page is about the work instead.
How Impact Painting grew
We have been painting for approximately seven years. That is deliberately not a founding date and not a round number on a badge: it is roughly how long this has been the work, and we would rather say it loosely and honestly than precisely and wrongly.
Growth came the way it usually does for a trade: one neighborhood at a time. South Bend and the towns around it came first, then southwest Michigan across the state line, close enough that the same people could genuinely cover both. Each of those two areas now has its own crew rather than one team driving between them.
Upstate South Carolina came later and works differently, and we say so on the page rather than in the small print. Spartanburg work is scheduled from the estimate rather than handled by a crew stationed there. It is a real service area with real finished jobs in it; it is simply not staffed the way the northern two are, and knowing that up front is worth more to you than a map with three identical pins on it.
Luke Kapala owns Impact Painting and still runs it. David has been our District Manager for approximately four years and now handles more of the painting operation day to day, while Luke gives a growing share of his time to his chiropractic practice. For most jobs, David is who the work goes through.

Between them that is the whole company: the person who owns it, the person most jobs actually run through, and the people holding the brush. The page you are reading does not have a fourth name on it because there is not a fourth name.
How we approach a painting project
Almost all of the difference between a paint job that lasts and one that does not happens before the first coat, and almost none of it is visible when the job is finished, which is exactly why it is the part that gets cut.
- We look at it first. Somebody walks the job with you, indoors or out, and the estimate comes from what is actually there rather than from a description of it.
- We protect the place. Furniture moved clear and covered with plastic sheeting, flooring protected, and outdoors, plants and fixtures covered before anything is washed.
- We prepare properly. Outside: power washing, treating surfaces with TSP, scraping back what is loose, priming and caulking exposed wood. Inside: walls inspected, patches sanded and primed rather than painted straight over.
- We paint. Sherwin-Williams products, sharp cut-ins, and cabinet doors and drawer fronts removed and sprayed in a controlled setting instead of brushed on the hinge.
- We walk it with you. At the end, together, before we pack up. Anything you are not happy with, we put right.
Most of our work happens in houses people are living in and buildings people are working in, and that shapes a job more than any of the painting does: which rooms come out of use and when, where the furniture goes, and how the place is left at the end of each day. We leave it as we found it. That is a small sentence and it is most of what people remember afterwards.
Drywall repair comes with the interior work when a wall needs it. It is preparation, not a service we sell on its own.

What we paint
- Interior painting. Walls, ceilings, trim, doors and stairwells, in occupied homes, worked around the people living in them.
- Exterior painting. Siding, soffit, fascia, trim, porches and outbuildings, where the preparation is the job and the coat is the finish of it.
- Cabinet refinishing. Doors and drawer fronts removed and sprayed rather than brushed on the hinge, which is the whole difference between a kitchen that looks factory-made and one that looks painted.
- Deck painting and staining. Washed, dried properly, and finished with the material the boards actually want.
- Commercial work in South Bend and Edwardsburg, scheduled around buildings that have to keep working while we are in them.

Estimates, and sending us photos instead
Somebody comes and looks at the job. The condition of what is already there sets most of the price, and it cannot be assessed from a description or a square-footage figure: two houses of the same size can be very different jobs once you are up a ladder looking at them. You get a written number afterwards. It is free, and accepting the visit commits you to nothing.
You do not have to start with an appointment, though. The estimate form takes up to five photographs, and a picture of the wall, the cabinets or the elevation you are worried about settles in one message what a phone call goes round in circles on. Send those and we can tell you what the job involves, what it depends on, and roughly where it sits, before anybody arranges a time to be at your house.
What photographs cannot do is finish the job of pricing it. Soft wood behind a downspout, a hairline crack that runs, a cabinet door that has been painted twice already: those decide the number and they are found in person. So the photos are the fast start, and the visit is the part that produces the figure you can hold us to.
If we think something should be dealt with before painting, or that a smaller job would serve you better than the one you asked about, you will hear that at the estimate rather than halfway through.
