On the job

What this work looks like

We paint interiors for homeowners and businesses in South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Osceola and Roseland: single rooms, whole houses, offices and commercial premises.

Most interior work happens in a building somebody is still living or working in. That shapes how we run the job more than anything about the paint does.

What we paint inside

Walls and ceilings, trim and baseboards, doors and door frames, window casings, crown molding, stair rails and spindles, closets and hallways. Drywall and plaster both, and previously painted woodwork.

Kitchens and bathrooms need a different approach from bedrooms, because moisture and cleaning are constant there and the finish has to tolerate both. Ceilings are their own decision: a flat white ceiling hides more than the walls do, and repainting one is often what makes a room look genuinely finished rather than merely recolored.

Working around you

Furniture is moved clear and covered with plastic sheeting, and flooring is protected across the whole room rather than in a strip along the baseboards. We work room by room where that suits you better than opening up the whole house at once, and we tell you at the start which rooms will be out of use and for how long.

You do not need to empty the house. Clearing small items off surfaces and taking down anything fragile helps, and we will tell you at the estimate what is worth moving and what we can work around.

The walls come first

Every wall is inspected before it is painted. Imperfections are corrected with spackling, sanding or priming; separation in trim and molding is caulked. Patches are sanded and primed rather than painted straight over, because joint compound absorbs differently from the wall around it and an unprimed repair shows through the finish coat in daylight.

This is the part that decides whether the job still looks right in two years, and it is the part that is invisible once the work is done. On an older house it is often where much of the labor goes, since settling tends to open up seams and nail pops over time.

How the painting goes

Then it is brush and roller work: sharp cut-ins at ceilings and trim, uniform texture across the wall. We use Sherwin-Williams products, and we clean up as we go rather than at the end.

How many coats a room needs depends on what is already on the wall and what is going over it. A small shift in a similar tone can cover in one; a strong color over a pale one, or the reverse, often needs two, and sometimes a tinted primer does more good than an extra finish coat. Coverage varies by product as well, so we work to what the surface actually needs rather than to a fixed number, and we will tell you what we expect before we start.

Choosing the finish

Sheen matters more than most people expect. A flatter finish hides an imperfect wall and is harder to scrub; a higher sheen wipes clean and shows every ripple underneath. Hallways, children’s rooms and kitchens usually want something washable. Ceilings usually want flat.

We will tell you what we would use and why, and the choice stays yours. Looking at a sample on your own wall, in your own light, at the time of day you actually use the room, tells you more than a chip under store lighting.

What affects the price

Room size and ceiling height, how many rooms, the condition of the surfaces, how much repair the walls need before anything else happens, the number of colors, and the materials chosen. Stairwells and vaulted ceilings cost more than their floor area suggests because of the access they need.

Trim work is priced separately in your head even if it is not on the invoice: cutting in doors, frames and baseboards is slow, detailed work, and a room with a lot of woodwork is a different job from a plain box of the same size.

We would rather look at the rooms than price them over the phone. The estimate is free either way. Request an estimate, or read more about how we handle interiors. You can also see cabinet painting in South Bend or everything we do in South Bend.

Common questions

How much does interior painting cost?

It depends on how many rooms are involved, how tall the walls are, how much repair the surfaces need, and whether ceilings, trim and doors are included. A sound repaint and a room that needs patching, sanding and priming first are different jobs at the same square footage. We would rather look than guess, so the estimate is priced to the actual work and it is free.

How long does interior painting take?

A smaller interior job is often a day or two. A whole-house repaint usually runs to several days, and rooms that need patching and priming add time before any finish coat goes on. You get a timeline with your estimate, before the work is booked.

Do you move and protect furniture?

Yes. Furniture is moved clear of the walls and covered with plastic sheeting, and flooring is protected before anything is opened. Anything that is not being painted is masked off. We leave the place as we found it.

Do you repair walls before painting?

We inspect walls for damage before we start, and patching, sanding and priming are part of the preparation rather than an afterthought. Paint does not hide a bad surface, it shows it. If something needs more than filling, you will hear that at the estimate rather than halfway through.

Do you offer painting services in South Bend, IN?

Yes. We handle interior, exterior, cabinet and deck painting for homes and businesses across South Bend and the communities around it, including Mishawaka and Granger.

Do you provide free painting estimates in South Bend?

Yes, and there is no obligation attached. Somebody comes out, looks at the job, talks through what it needs, and gives you a number before anything is booked.
