A timber deck wrapping an above-ground pool, with its railing, gate and steps recoated. The deck boards and the rail were finished separately, which is why the rail reads lighter than the floor.

A pool deck takes more weather than the rest of a yard and takes it flat. Water sits on a horizontal board instead of running off it, and around a pool the boards are wet several times a day all summer, so a finish that would last years on a fence has a much shorter argument here.

Why the drying matters more than the coating

Deck work starts with washing and then with actually letting the boards dry, and that second step is the one that gets cut. Wood that still holds water takes a finish that sits on top of it rather than soaking in, and that is what flakes off in sheets the following spring rather than wearing down evenly.

Which is also why deck work is scheduled around the weather rather than the diary. A dry week matters more than a convenient one.

What to expect if you want this

Tell us whether you want paint or stain and we will tell you honestly what each will do on your boards. A deck that has been painted before generally has to stay painted; one that has only been stained still has both options open.
